For those interested, this behavior was introduced to Mozilla for
Windows and Mac in 2001 (after previously existing in Netscape 4 and
Internet Explorer), and we had the same arguments then as y'all are
having now. <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37587>

Without inventing a new GTK control, there is no good answer to this
question. It's efficiency for most people (larger click target) versus
consistency and flexibility.
