Yes this is surprising isn't it.  Please do read about the legal issues
it's important that people understand this correctly.  There is nothing
wrong with Totem, it works great and is getting better all the time.
The problem is with restricted formats.  

If you think that the license issue is wrong and you are going to ignore
it anyway, just remember that the same types of laws that restrict the
content these codecs play are also the same laws that give the GPL it's
power....  Yes I think patents on codecs are just plain wrong and things
are changing slowly, the best you can do is push for content released
under creative commons and such and with a free codec.

Change society and this will become a non issue.
