I tried the commandline from there and got some error about not being
able to find the ramdisk. There's also the problem that the LiveCD is
expecting to load a cloop off a CD while qemu is giving it an
uncompressed view into the cloop as a hard disk. Some of that looks
like it's in the commandline, but perhaps not all of it.

It would probably be difficult / impossible to create the vm state
non-interactively. Maybe worth looking into if anyone can get it to
boot though. But in the end I'm sure you're right that the vm state
file would be too large. That's really too bad as an instant-up Live
session would be very compelling as a demo.
