I think there needs to be a broader conversation about user education
as a goal in Ubuntu. This seems to be the central crux of
disagreement, whether Ubuntu's goal is to create a user environment
that requires no special knowledge or training, or whether Ubuntu's
goal is broader--place it under the rubric of "empowerment". It's
possible to see the first goal as desirable as a means to encourage
adoption, without giving up the second as the ultimate goal. There is
also the consideration that there are many implicit skills in using
any operating system--in using a computer--that new users simply lack,
and that these need to be made explicit, in as many ways as possible.
I don't think it's so valid for someone reading a -devel list to say I
don't need this completely optional aid, so nix that.
