X mouse acceleration patch

Hi there,

I'm wondering if there's a possibility of including Simon Thum's mouse
acceleration patch for Xorg in the Ubuntu system. Currently it is not part
of the mainstream X codebase, but from what I can see it is certainly stable
enough to be. Simon tells me it's not likely to be included in the
mainstream X code till at least version 7.3.

What this patch does is provide a smooth mouse acceleration function for X
windows (as opposed to the one provided by xset -m, which multiplies the
mouse speed by a given constant factor only above a certain threshold,
making for a very jumpy mouse.)

I think this would be appreciated by a lot of laptop users (and anyone who
uses alternative pointing devices) who are often limited to using the
touchpad or the touchstick in the middle of their keyboards -- very handy
devices, but very painful to use under the current mouse acceleration model.
I know I would certainly appreciate it :-)

Sorry if I've posted to the wrong place -- I haven't been involved in this
mailing list until now.

cheers,
Bryan
