asterisk_1.2.10.dfsg permission problems?

Greetings,
    I just recently backported asterisk_1.2.10.dfsg for dapper. Everything works fine but asterisk cannot write to configuration files(eg. /etc/asterisk/voicemail.conf & /var/spool/asterisk/voicemail). I also apply the asterisk_fix script still no success. Can I just run asterisk as root?
