For use on a LAN, wouldn't something like Apple's Bonjour protocol work
best? I know when I'm on our Mac-populated WLAN, it's super-convienient, and
I'D LOVE to have a built-in, server-less messaging protocol in Ubuntu/GNOME.
Come to think of it, isn't Bonjour an open protocol? I seem to recall the
Rhythmbox guys using it for compatibiliity with iTunes library sharing...
