Guys, this meandering thread could be taken off-list, and any results of the
discussion summarised afterward (if relevant to Ubuntu development). Gotta
keep the signal-to-noise ratio sane. Thanks. :-)

(Vincent: To put you on the right path - that is xscreensaver's gamma fade,
which you can't do behind dialogues because they would also be affected by
the fade.)
