creating packages for LiveSupport

I've started this discussion with Daniel Holbach earlier, and he
suggested to move it to the ubuntu-devel list.
The issue is, that in the LiveSupport project, we're using some
libraries that we had to patch to make them work for us. Some patches
are pending to be migrated to their appropriate main source trees, some
where rejected outright.
Therefore we opted for the solution to include all these packages and
patches in our source tarball, and our compilaton procedure compiles all
these as well, irrispectable of their existence on the system. the all
are installed under the LiveSupport installation prefix (say
/usr/local/livesupport)
Daniel has suggested that from all these, separate ubuntu packages
should be made. but there is a conflict here - as 'stock' packages for
all these probably exist, but we need them with our patches.
what would be a proper way to making them work?
