GRUB isn't stuck, and everything is fine.

You have not seen 2.6.12.3 or 2.6.12.8, but 2.6.12-3 and 2.6.12-8.  Each of
those went through several revisions, 2.6.12-3.x and 2.6.12-8.x.  We're
currently at 2.6.12-8.12, the 12th revision of 2.6.12-8.
