Hi, this is godzero from ubuntu forums.
I saw the colony 4 iso on distrowatch, downloaded it, backuped some
stuff, put on a pot of coffee (it's late here) and tried it out.

First with my hardware: (this is a heavily modified emachines t2642
circa december '03)

2.6 Ghz celeron, 128K L2
400 Mhz fsb
1024 MB pc2700 ram
intel 845gv chipset
64 MB shared video (up to)
(the "v" means "value", which means "no APG port"...arg)
 ac '97 audio
 10/100 nic
 usb 2.0 X 6
 parallel
 serial
2X(40 GB) HDD
dvd+-r/w dl (sony dru-800a) firmware v1 (v4 is DLable as a .exe, no
windows right now)
cdrw 48/24/48
conextant 56k modem (unused) pci
dlink 802.11g (108 mode) wifi (unused) pci
radeon 9200 se 64 mb pci (not plugged in right now for simpicity's sake)
1.44 mb floppy (remember those?)

Install:
Burned the iso to a dvd+rw (mostly to see if it would work... yep just fine)
rebooted to dvd
standard install (not server, english, usa, etc)
erased my / and /home partitions to eliminate cross pollination problems
my hardware clock is set to GMT, my timezone is usa/cst. It figured it
out just fine.

my first problem:
"your network is problebly not using dhcp..... or slow..."
(yes it is, both cat5 and wifi point at my router, which is serving dhcp)
tried again. nogo.
went manual... 192.168.1.10/tux all resources pointing at router 192.168.1.1
(didn't work... more on that later)

#reboot

problems: (every boot)
[4294669.937000] acpi-unable to load system description tables
........more...........
 [4294670.951000] 8139cp: pci device 000:02:02.0 id 10ec:8139rev10 is
not 8139c+ compat chip
 " " 8139cp: try the "8199too" driver instead

^ not sure if this is my wifi, modem, or fan/thermal

[4294671.197000] irq9: nobody cared (try booting with the "irqpool" option
.....more....
 disabling irq9
fatal: error inserting fan nsd //(nsd was a abreviation I thought
would would be easy to remember.. nope )

whenever it gets to "configuring network interfaces, it hangs for a
min or two, but fails silently, even after I set it back to dhcp)

gui:
X11/gdm starts
I hear the chime in just fine
login name/pass
gnome boots (fairly fast... is this faster than HH?)
I now get no sound. At all.
video is stuck at 800X600 (?) even though x11 has 1024x768 in it's
config. so I added 1028X1024 and rebooted, but still 800X600
multi media keys work fine :)
I can't get the gnome networking proggy to setup my nic right, and I
can't see the whole window due to the low res.

Please respond to this e-mail with any config file requests/ect
