This is the behaviour in os x - it does take some getting used to but it is
not that hard.
in os x finder - it has next to the drive icon an eject button. it also has
one in the finder menu next to the drive. This could be done in the places
menu.
Also os x has a shortcut for it - in its case Cmd+E
