Question: Who's your target average user?
If your target is tech savvy people, then you can explain
permissions and the reasoning for the defaults, whatever
you choose.
However, if your target audience is the somewhat inexperienced
user, coming from a Windoze environment, it makes no sense to
use a default merely because of tradition -- or because of a
justification that is beyond their ken. It ain't your father's
Internet any more.
I come down on the "your data is private unless you specifically
put it somewhere public (shared folder)" side of the fence, as
I think a large segment of the audience is people who are not
particularly savvy.
