Software suspend is scary, and multiple booting

It is using the text-mode feedback for me only if I manually set 
USE_DPMS=false in /etc/default/acpi-support, but
the default seems to be to use DPMS; so the screen powers off and you 
can't see the texts, then the laptop humms for about 10 seconds until it 
powers down itself. Initially I found it confusing too.
