Is there a Wiki page that discusses this kind of issue:

IIRC, in the ia32-libs-gtk* source, there's a note about it being a hack
and that a better long-term solution was being thought over or planned.
I'd like to know what that is.

I'd also like advice wrt best short term solution...  I'd like to run
Realplayer on amd64.  I think that for now, what I'll do is look into
having the ia32-libs-gtk* build the libraries itself with patches to
have the libtool --libdir set appropriately.  Does that sound right?
Will a patch to that effect be accepted?

I'm saying all this without even looking it over very thoroughly... so
you know what that's like.  I'm off to look it over right now.  (A nice
break from Calculus.)
