Of course, but distribution developers and upstream developers are
generally different people. As far as distribution using unstable
software, I seem to recall that a couple years back libpng or one of the
other image processing libraries changed its API without a warning. As
you might imagine the whole of GNOME, mozilla, KDE and other "stable"
projects were immediately affected by an upgrade.
