I tested with 20040329 daily build, on two systems, and the problem is
still there. Eight long minutes before the end of this step...

The install process did not asked me for any resolution. X started
at 1024x768 at 60Hz but the monitor can do easily 1280x1024 at 85Hz...

It would be nice to have a hardware monitor database so the user can
override detected defaults. I guess that is for Hoary+1, right ?
