Array 7 is quite old now, and some of the bugs you mention are known to be
fixed in recent daily builds.  If you could retry with the current daily
install CD, that would be a great help.

It should have timed out quite quickly since you had no default route or DNS
server.

Were you asked which modes to use?  If the probe, fails, the system asks you
which video mode to use, and selects sync ranges based on that.

Please report a bug, package: udev.  Include in the report what you see in
/sys/class/scsi_generic/sg<X>/device/type for your scanner.
