building custom ubuntu install/live cd from scratch?

Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible to build a custom ubuntu install/live cd
from scratch. 

Are the scripts/tools that are used to build the nightly iso files available
somewhere? 

I know that there is some instruction on the wiki that uses an existing iso
file to build upon, but what if I want to have a minimal (very tiny) iso?
