ACPI support in Hoary

sorry, if thats not completely the topic of this thread but,

i have a desktop pc (as in "not a laptop" ) and would like to have 
hibernate and sleep functions.

is the screen blanking when im away for some time a sleep or just a 
blank screen? how do i get it to hibernate when i press the power button 
instead of shutting down?
