This is what a Canadian layout looks like:

It sounds like you have a US layout keyboard.

It worked for you in the past because selecting a Canadian layout in the
installer would (erroneously) give you a US layout in X.  That bug was
recently fixed.

So next time, tell the installer that you have a US keyboard (or let it
determine your layout by prompting you to press keys).

Please report a bug, sounds like gamin/dnotify/inotify problems.
