The idea of partitioning raid is ok, but there are different usecases for LVM2
that RAID cannot easily cover (like partition resize).
Performing these kind of operation (like shrink/grow) can be much more difficult
and prone to errors than with LVM.

Also LVM can span across devices of different sizes without any problem, while RAID
(other than linear/raid0) can't. So you are limited on what you can aggregate.
