Not everyone uses synaptic, I for one didn't even know about it for the
first few weeks of using Ubuntu. If anything, it should be noted in the
FAQ and left at that. IMO, the way it is now is they way it should be
because not everyone using Ubuntu is a "home enthusiast" where adding an
unsupported package or two is not a big deal.
