It can't really be explained quickly to people who are not distribution
developers, especially not people migrating from Windows or the Mac. What
does "unsupported" mean in the context of software? The programs are
unstable and may crash (untrue)? That you can't get tech support for it on
the internet (untrue)? What it would really mean is "the software is
likely to work but the packages may not work" - but I'd wager this
distinction is far too subtle for most people to understand, let alone
empathise with.

I don't think you can explain the whole repository system and the
different gradings and names, it's simply an artifact of the
centralised software distribution model. There is no equivalent on other
systems which are decentralised and so do not suffer this problem.

You may as well leave it as "universe", it's just as meaningless and
unhelpful as any other name you can come up with.
