dpkg-buildpackage woes

Alrighty. I guess, being smart, I'll just make a backup of the files in
debian that I spent so much time creating ;-)
The maint guide says to use dh_make first, should I do that?
Do I run debuild instead of "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot"?
