Why don't you try cleaning up everything, make a good
<package>_<version>.orig.tar.gz , a clean a tested Makefile, and run
debuild -S -sa??

The maint guide says to use dh_make first, should I do that?<br>
Do I run debuild instead of "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot"?<br>
