I'm certainly interested. I will check this project and see how I can
contribute.



One package that I would certainly try to add as an option is postgis.
Once you start handling large datasets it is very important.



An open-source GIS package that I only discovered lately but seems very
interesting is Saga GIS:

I haven't found a debian package yet, but I compiled it myself under
(k)ubuntu.
