It frequently hangs for 10 seconds or more. It becomes
virtually unusable when sites use complex DHTML, such as scrolling
text. When minimized for several minutes, Linux seems to re-allocate
the memory it was using, so that maximizing it again takes 20 seconds
or so. I think finding a usable web browser will be the single biggest
problem for Ubuntu Lite.
Good observation. Firefox takes about 6 seconds to load on the current ubuntu lite distro and while it's performance is a concern, It is not the single Biggest issue (Probably priority three). I did not know about deerpark, sounds good.
The Single Biggest issue is a decient word processor. Abiword is good, but not microsoft Compatiable (can read but cannot write). It also cannot handle large documents. Openoffice Takes approximately 1 minute to load on a Pentium 2 350mhz PC with 128mb of ram or 3 minutes with 64mb of ram. Preloading Openoffice reduces those times to 15 seconds and 1 minute respectively.
IceWM to
me feels old and confusing
Yea I know what you are saying, you should see how it looks after it is configured properly! It looks really smick once done. When the site goes back up take a look at how ICEWM and Rox is Done (BTW icewm comes preconfigured on the distro, I'm not expecting users to configure it). The next ubuntu lite will be even better!
If combined with Ivman, the wonderful media
automounting will work independantly of desktop environment, even with
ROX or the command line.
No need Rox looks at Fstab and automounts any directories listed there when you click on them! The Ubuntu Hal/Dbus preconfiguration ROCKS! as we have USB support done (yea you have to click on a directory to get the drive, meh). So all you have to do is click on /media and the drive( aka /floppy0) to mount it's contents (or just click on the floppy drive desktop icon to bring up it's contents :)). Works really well (BIG fan of ROX Filer). Yea an Automounter may be needed for other applications like Openoffice, Xpdf (or evince), etc so ill keep Ivman in mind.
I am eagerly looking forward to this project - it is sorely needed in
the Linux world. Not everyone lives in a developed country where RAM
modules can be obtained for free. And not everyone in the developed
countries wants to take the time to upgrade hardware or spend money on
it when not really necessary. Thanks for working on this!
YESSS!!!!! Perfect, Someone gets it!
We Need YOU!
