Colony CD 2

Ooooops...... big problem :-/

The installer seems to go fine, apart from one tiny error in the very
last step : "Registering Documentation, please wait", about one file.
Then it starts X, I get GDM, the music and everything.
The problems start as soon as I try to use Gnome : if I try to open a
window, start an app or whatever, most of the time, Gnome will just hang
and give me nothing, or draw an empty window, or draw it, but hang when
I click on a button. Sometimes I don't even do anything at all : I just
watch Gnome as it is being started/loade, and sometimes it won't even
finish loading, for example it will not load the applets in the top
panel, or it will hang as soon as I click on the "System" menu or
whatever. Basically, it hangs all over the place, and freezes solid
after a minute or two maximum.
Seems to be only Gnome though, as I can always switch to a virtual
console using the K/B, or restart X, again using the K/B (Alt+Ctrl+BS).

So, I guess I am now already waiting for Colony #3 !! ;o)

With some luck, it will cure itself after a few days updating, which I
can thankfully still do since the recovery mode always work.

So I didn't see much of Breezy apart from the installer itself, so can't
give much feedback. I did however like the "help" line at the bottom of
the screen, in blue. I also liked that when you type your password, it
prints '*' characters, instead of nothing at all.
I noticed that the "Installing base system" phase, somehow took
significantly longer than it used to with Warty and Hoary, no idea why.
I also keep seeing a black box/character in the bottom right corner of
the screen, as if it were a mouse text cursor, but the mouse doesn't
respond.
The K/B layout chooser is still confusing (doesn't seem to have changed
at all), but there is already a bug report about this I think, so I
won't elaborate.

I did notice that this time, once the all the packages are unpacked, I
got asked about 'X' configuration right from the start of the "setting
package blah-blah' phase, whereas before, it happened in the middle of
this phase, requiring me to sit by the computer for a few more minutes.
So, I see this an improvement. Obviously ideally, the 'nv' driver wold
let ddcprobe do its work, so that X doesn't ask me anything at all ! ;o)
But IIRC what Daniel said, it's a known nv bug which can't be fixed, as,
to my surprise, he said that the nv driver is not really open source, so
he can't fix my problem :o(

I also noticed, again, some strange things about the way that the
partitioner displays "smileys" next to the partitions summary, requiring
me to triple ;o) check the status of most of my partitions, to make sure
that they were not going to be used/touched.

Well that's it, sorry for not being able to give more feedback than
this... maybe Colony #3 will let me use Gnome so I can report more
problems ;o)

Also, now that Breezy is pretty much 3 months old, half way throught the
development cycle, do you think you will now be able to release Colony
CD's every 2 or 3 weeks instead of 6 ?

Before I forget : yeah, I did think of triple checking that the
downloaded ISO matched the md5 C/S indicated on the download page, and I
also checked the CD's integrity using the dedicated option in the
installer. But, everything seems fine, so I have no idea why Gnome
behaves soooooo strangely :o(

Regards,

Vince, a bit disappointed not to be able to play more with his Breezy
atm...
