Apps that rely on usb mass storage devices being named /dev/sd* ? I'm pretty
sure that libgnomevfs doesn't, text apps usually allow the user to specify
devices, and I don't think there are any non-gnome, non-text apps that use
device files in main or restricted.

The problem with switching would be that users would wonder why they can't mount
their usb drive anymore if it's fstab mounted and not mounted by
gnome-volume-manager.
