Is there some way of finding out whether something is happening with a
package that's uninstallable at the moment?
The package I'm interested in is libgnome-dev:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libgnomeui-dev: Depends: libgnome2-dev (>= 2.6.0) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libbonoboui2-dev (>= 2.5.4) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgnomevfs2-dev (>= 2.7.1) but it is not going to be installed

Software is not manufactured, it is something you write and publish.
Keep Europe free from software patents, we do not want censorship
by patent law on written works.
As it is used, with the average user not bothering to verify the
certificates exchanged and no revocation mechanism, SSL is just simply a
(very slow) Diffie-Hellman key-exchange method. Digital certificates
provide no actual security for electronic commerce; it's a complete sham.
