It is already possible to build a package using the existing OOo packages, but 
this is more of a hack than a proper solution and still would need a lot of 
work to go into Ubuntu restricted/multiverse.

It's not as bad as you say - ODBC support is already present; it is only JDBC 
support that is missing.
