I've seen the exact same behaviour on two of my system using Intel's
on-board graphics and running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg didn't
help. There's a bug report in and I suspect this won't be too
difficult to fix (since Xorg is correctly recognizing the chipset and
the supported resolutions, it just isn't showing up when you actual
start X.) Follow the progress on the bug here:

 and maybe try Warty in the meantime, since that's the current stable
release. I didn't have this problem there.
