I'm not sure that GRUB supports booting from a USB device.  At any rate, it
probably isn't well-tested.

Even if it had gotten past this point, you might have run into problems soon
thereafter, since I don't think that mkinitrd currently handles loading the
USB drivers in the initrd in order to mount a root filesystem on a USB
device.
