At least it only needs java for the internal database type - you can still use 
external databases e.g. postgresql, mysql

One of the RH OOo developers has been working on getting OOo to compile with 
gcj.  The problem is that OOo uses quite a few java classes which are either 
proprietary or unimplemented in classpath yet.

I am testing building the Ubuntu OOo2 packages with gcj now.
