Boot order

Hi,
I just read the hpdarm thread, and I'd like to raise a similar issue
with the order of boot processes that I have long found extremely annoying.
This is the fact that ubuntu by default, on every boot tries to sync the
clock to an ntp-server.
My issue with this in general is that when there is no internet
connection, this will hang, time out, display a scary fail, and then
continue.
I like my system to boot as fast as possible, so this is something I'm
not thrilled about.
What makes it worse is that at this moment, ntp timesync is done before
rp-pppoe is brought up, so for many of the clueless low-budget adsl
connections that are so popular here, this will always time out.
The last time I raised this issue, I was told that anyone still
bothering with rppppoe should get a router, which, in the end, I did.
Many users howevery are not so lucky. Many modems here in the
Netherlands come with a modem integrated on a usb-stick, and thus there
is no possibility for these people to avoid rppppoe.
The timeout for the timesync is another issue. imho it is far too long.
I'd like to see the timesync removed by default (yes, I know I can do it
myself)
If that is not acceptable, I'd prefer to see:
rppppoe come up first, then timesync
timeout period shortened.
