OK, lets say this gets done, then we have a way for people interested
in developing in Python to get started. I think this is an important
first step and I think we should decide soon (for Hoary would be
good).
Once we have that we can look to a "full-service" IDE. Should we
start one from scratch? Should we throw our collective hat into the
ring of an existing project? Should we scrap the IDE idea completely
and just improve whatever disparate tools we've cobbled together in
our meta-packages? That will be an interesting discussion, but lets
get these meta-packages picked out first (assuming there is consensus
that we should do this...)
So, what should go into these meta-packages?
I think the following would be good:
- Glade2 with Python support
- some debugger (graphical would be best)
- some editor with an understanding of Python syntax
- some version control system interface
Seeing as I've never worked on anything meaningful in Python before I
may be missing some things in my list above. Indeed I may be missing
the boat entirely, but I do think that if making Ubuntu the
environment of choice for developing with Python is serious, we've got
to get a move on things one way or another.
