This is the GNOME way of doing things. Suddenly developpers decide that
the way their code is working isn't good enough, and they drop
everything.
The same happened when they moved from Gnome 1 to Gnome 2 (or was it
gnome 2.0 to 2.2 ? don't remeber). We had a working Gnome, and suddenly
they switched to the new version with ZERO features, everything was gone
and it took more than 1 year for the features to come back and have a
usable Gnome again.
After this, I am not surprised at all that the menu editing feature has
again, SUDDENLY disappeared without further notice, and will not be
there for the new release.
Welcome to Gnome.
But what you have to keep in mind, is that gnome is not a finished
product and is still in developpment. Featurewise, Gnome is alpha/beta
software.
