I guess the major reason that ideas like this get a quiet reception is that
until COMPOSITE works nicely on lots of systems, we really can't do these
kinds of things nicely. See the logout fade as an example - because we need
everything but the front dialogue to be dimmed, it's pretty ugly. If we get
reliable COMPOSITE in future, we can greyscale everything else quite easily,
similar to what you're describing for the password dialogue (however, I
still don't think it's a subdued enough effect for the purpose).
