Hello,

As it is my first post on this mailing list, let me present myself very
shortly. Linux user since 1997. I went though early Suse, many Mandrakes
until 10.1 and 6 month on Ubuntu. I use it @home & @work. No
other-os at home. I define myself as a geek mom, despite growing my 3 sons,
don(t let me as much time as I used to spend on technical issues.

I subscribed to Bug 15324 at bugzilla.buntu.com because we use such an
affected setup at home.

Random hard freezes with ATAPI drive on an SATA controller
<http://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=15324>

The SATA ATAPI DVD burner is unplugged and unused since 4 months (time
it has replaced a dead ATAcdrw) because it cause the SATA to lock up and
various side effects as mentioned in the bug and simmilar ones.

Then I recieved the latest bug update saying:
"This bug has been fixed in the latest kernel in our Dapper release.
There are no plans to fix this in breezy."

Sad, so the bug is identified, it has a fix but:
- I will have to wait the next ubuntu version to use the dvdburner (no
other CD reader pluged so I am unable to use anything CD related)
- I will have to instal unstable development Dapper version to get it to
work and kiss welcome to new bugs and goodby to several unavailable
package I actualy use now.

How can I get a new fixed kernel now or isntalling a new ubuntu kernel
from Dapper without loosing non-free kernel drivers for my nvidia card
and without breaking future updates of my ubuntu setup?

Do you have an opinion about not fixing bugs for current release?

Do you know why it is that way?
What may make it not possible to release new updated bug fixed
components, such as a new kernel for current ubuntu Breezy release?

Cheers,
