Shutdown notification... Where to implement?

A notification could especially be usefull in cases where you press the 
poweroff button by accident ;-) I imagine it would be handy in this case if 
the user was also given the opportunity to stop the whole shutdown process, 
so he might get a chance to save (some of) his work.

I don't know if this is possible at all in linux. Perhaps if done early 
enough? But it would be a great additional feature I think.
