Shutdown notification... Where to implement?

I totally agree... The main problem is (from my understanding) a popup must
come from
an already running application. In this case the update manager is running
in the background
who launches the popup.
The way I see things (and I'm probably very wrong):
_User shuts down computer
_Init is called
_A script for shutdown puts a message on DBUS (/etc/rc0.d/S0notify for
instance)
_An application picks up the DBUS message and displays a notification...
(I'm trying to figure which
app to use)
Of course I might be very wrong and things should go through hald or
whatever else...
