I totally agree... The main problem is (from my understanding) a popup must come from <br>
an already running application. In this case the update manager is running in the background<br>
who launches the popup.<br>
The way I see things (and I'm probably very wrong):<br>
_User shuts down computer<br>
_Init is called<br>
_A script for shutdown puts a message on DBUS (/etc/rc0.d/S0notify for instance)<br>
_An application picks up the DBUS message and displays a notification... (I'm trying to figure which <br>
app to use)<br>

Of course I might be very wrong and things should go through hald or whatever else...<br>
