P.S. I realized psaux and /dev/input/mice had disappeared which was
the cause of the mouse problem. after checking the udev rules and
finding nothing wrong I almost gave up, but reinstalled udev as a last
resort. It seems to have sorted itself out and everything is working
as it should (/dev/psaux and /dev/input/mice are back!)
