Hi all

Congrats on the release, and Thanks for the live CD...
worked without a hitch :)

Just a few notes from a default install (1 ssh key added to
get my notes off another box ... thats the only change ;)).
I hope to have a look for fixes to some of these later, but
I want to get these thoughts down while they are reasonably
fresh. Sorry if this feels overy critical, but IMO feedbacks
what makes stuff good, and I want to try and help:

1. I was wondering if the extra options for partitioning
(lvm) should be kept for the expert install? seeing these
extra options would be worrying to someone who doesnt know
what lvm is, and who might not look for help. On the other
hand, the inclusion of a 'use largest free space' option is
quite brilliant, and I think could be a great thing for the
installer.

2. Grub was wonderfull, being the first installer I have run
to detect all 6 installed systems and offer to put them in.
These systems include Debian Hurd, Windows XP (usualy
commented out, but still there for detection), SUSE,
Mandrake, my existing Ubuntu Breezy and Debian Sarge. So
thank you and well done.

3. The new progress bar that covers all the scrolling text
is a
realy good idea, even if I dont like it :) It makes the
installer 'normal person' friendly, and provides some
indication of how far the install has to go. Unfortuantely
it was let down by Aptitude, which crashed while trying to
download packages [1] from the australian servers (see point
4 about
this as well). I killed off Aptitudes process, and
somethings about
access to the cd and http and after pausing for 10 seconds
or so (just long enough to worry) X started.

4. Could there be some note that being internet connected
will download packages at the start of the install? This has
caused confusion with several people I know about
why the installer is downloading for some but not others.
Also, could downloading updates be optional? I dont have
bandwidth to spend sucking down packages from the master
servers, only my ISPs mirrors. Perhaps the packages target
can be changed, or updates be manual after booting into the
system for the first time?

5. When will the firefox splash screen change? is that an
ubuntu-artwork question?

6. The scroll wheel on my mouse doesnt work... I asume this
is an X thing? the mouse is a standard 2 button + scroll
wheel job, so should be easy for me to fix.

7. This is a very minor thing... but just looking at the
menus I think the 'system monitor' icon is misleading... it
looks to me more like a virtual resolution changing program
from that icon.

I remember there being several logs that could be viewed to
see the errors... what were they again please? I can try to
get more accurate details if required.

[1] sorry i dont have the exact packages (i didnt write them
down), but it was while updating xorg and some language
packs. It printed
"writing extended state notification [done] "
and then stopped. pressing <ctrl> C didnt help, in either
the console or main install screen. It was at this point I
went and logged in with my acount and sudo -s before killing
the processes and changing the sources list.

Karl, hopeing to use *and* help.
