Thanks for your mail. I just tried to reproduce the problem on
synaptic and it works fine for me (telling me about non-authenticated
packages). I tested both hoary and breezy.

What version of synaptic do you use? What does 
"COLUMNS=120 dpkg -l synaptic" tell you?
