Well, I'm on serial modem too! And switched from Warty to Hoary RC, them
partially upgraded (Gnome) to Final.

I suggest you to install && use *gnome-ppp* (which uses *wvdial*)
instead of the applet from Gnome and/or instead pppconfig.

This way I can always connect at 115200 (and actually get around 5.6
KB/s as expected from a 56K hardware modem, with peaks to 10-11 kBps).
