This is most likely a hardware problem; make sure all of the cables are secure, etc.

This mirror works OK for me.  Either the problem has since been resolved, or
the mirror is OK and the problem is specific to you or your network (e.g.,

This is a result of the failure above.

The base-config process runs as root; that is not the reason for this error.
There was some problem acquiring the lock.  This could be related to your
hard disk problem.

The hostname should not include a '.' character; probably the installer
should have refused it.

Probably your fstab entries in Debian are incorrect; ask for help in the
support forums.
