3 errors (at least) in hoary-rc installation

Well, it only occurs when a bad sector on the HDD is being read, so
debian on another partition will not report the problem because it
doesn't access that sector. The same with the previous installation --
the system might not have had a reason to access the bad bits, so it
never reported it (or you may have never seen it, because it's only
reported to the logs). Of course, you may be right and it's just a
combination of the kernel in Ubuntu and your IDE controller, but
seeing as Ubuntu is unlikely to have any additional patches for
something as lowlevel as that, and that hard drive is the most common
component to frequently fail in computers, I would say that the
problem probably lies within your HDD.
Test it with another -- see if you get the problem to reoccur.
