Translations?

Hi,
a couple of days ago I installed Ubuntu on my parents' computer, to see
how it was, and I ended up swapping my own Gentoo for it (that's a good
grade for you).

Anyway, the only thing that bugs me is that not the entire desktop is
translated to my native language (that would be Swedish). What I wonder
is: how do I do if I want to translate the strings you've added to the
ordinary GNOME, and roughly how many strings are we talking about?
